The North is still the most untamed part of Westeros. But industry has found itself in the kingdom in the form of farming, livestock, and lumber. The Stark brand can be found almost anywhere. The labor is hard, but simple men can find themselves with good work that pays well. The North, for the most part, is cut off from the rest of Westeros, still mostly uninfluenced by the southern half of the kingdoms; though relations are good. There are only a few major cities, and minor townships. The North represents a form of wild abandon that often attracts those looking to lose themselves in the mostly-untouched lands.
